Delhi Youth Parliament

I received an email on the college ID from CBS info informing me about a mock parliament competition organized by the Delhi Legislative Assembly by the name of Delhi Youth Parliament (DYP). The prelims had a task of writing an essay on Mahatma Gandhi and the relevance of his ideologies in the current times.
As a CBSite I have had enough corporate exposure and I am constantly searching for opportunities that allow me to use skills other than my business acumen. A well-written submission helped me in becoming one of the eighty-three students selected from colleges all over Delhi to be a part of the first-ever edition of DYP. It was a three-day event wherein we were taught how our legislative assembly works, how a bill/resolution is passed.
After assigning us into the ruling party, the opposition and the independent candidates we were separated and taken into the MLA lounges. Through a voting process – The CM, The deputy CM and other cabinet ministers were selected out of the 45 students comprising the ruling party. Yours truly was elected as the chief whip. Having heard about the position for the first time, learning and living the role was a titillating experience.
The second and third day we sat in the actual assembly and acted like elected representatives. Going through all the motions that we witness in our Indian political assemblies. The slander, the rebuttals, the speeches, the table banging and we as the ruling party even witnessed the opposition walking out as we had a clear majority on every vote.
Although the business background was not much of a help in the whole process, the management skills taught by CBS did pave a way for me to be one of the star participants of the event. I was awarded a certificate and letter of excellence by Delhi’s Deputy CM – Manish Sisodia.
I encourage all of my fellow CBSites to participate in such events and gain the experience while simultaneously making a name for our college in the circle.
